Airbrushing not the issue

There has been a lot of debate over the past few months with regard to photo-shopping pictures of models and actresses.

Everywhere from the silly debacle of Demi Moore’s missing hip-

Aaaand.. it's back.

To the not so silly editing of Ralph Lauren Model Filippa Hamilton-

Aaaand... she's gone.

The question now is: is photo editing appropriate?

This to me is a no brainer.

Of course it’s okay, so long as the intentions are to fix minor flaws (weight, sorry Uncle Karl, is not one of those things). Photos of anyone are prettier and easier on the eyes if acne is cleaned up, cellulite smoothed over and  eyes a little whiter.

The problem Westernized countries seem to have is that we equate beauty with thin.

thin= beautiful.

anything else=average or down right ugly

Women ARE beautiful, in all shapes and sizes. Of course we have flaws that are better covered up, but our body shape is not one of them. Thick, thin, average, big, or small, women are just beautiful.

So it’s frustrating that everyone is getting up in arms over just editing of photos and not really focusing on the fact that thin is not a qualifier for beauty.

Who gives a fuck about airbrushing away blemishes. I on the other hand do give a fuck when they make a size 4 model look like a a zombie (as much as I love my zombies, I just prefer them to be actually be dead and trying to eat Mila Jovovich)- That for some reason, that’s what people think women should look like or that that’s what people want to look at!

Women have a right to feel sexy no matter what, because by default, just by being a woman they are SEXY.

Does that mean I condone stuffing your face with food and saying “oh well, I don’t care what I look like”, no. That’s just as disgusting because you’re still disrespecting your body.

There needs to be a shift in thinking here about weight to health. It’s not what you look like, but about taking care of yourself- eating more balanced diets. Balanced and healthy.

It is sheer idiocy to think that all bodies can be thin and lean…but they can be meatier or radically less fatty.

Of course that shift won’t happen anytime soon. There are far too many things preventing it, not just the media’s image of women, but people’s misconception of health all together.

I find myself being a little harsher on those who eat whatever the hell they want then whine when they’re realize they’re fat than I am about the too thin thing (one might try to argue that it’s because I fall into the latter category…to that I have two words “you wish”)

To be fare, it’s all the same. It’s treating yourself and your body poorly. Giving into unhealthy urges that are detrimental to your health and even that of your children, born or unborn, is bad. Bad bad bad.

These debates over these photos opens the door for a lot of discussion but no one is really taking the opportunity.

The photo-editing is only a symptom of a bigger problem. Fixing that doesn’t actually solve anything.

COME ON AMERICA! WAKE UP!

You took away my womb...

Breasts, uterus and vagina – The making of a woman. But what happens when one or all become defunct? Hysterectomy involves major surgery, but probably the aftercare will be just as important if not more important than the actual operation. Whatever the reason is for surgery the emotional turmoil women go through is far worse that the actual physical side. Support from friends and families are paramount.

We would like to thank Linda McClelland one of Australias leading physiotherapists for the following information about  hysterectomy’s

What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of a woman’s uterus or womb. There are various reasons for why your gynaecologist may perform hysterectomy surgery and a range of different hysterectomy procedures that may be used:

  • A total hysterectomy (or complete hysterectomy) involves the surgical removal of the uterus and cervix (ring of muscle at the base of the uterus)
  • A partial hysterectomy (or subtotal hysterectomy) involves the surgical removal of the uterus without removing the cervix. Further reading click here

You can minimise the risk of post operative hysterectomy complications and avoid some potential side effects of a hysterectomy through rest and appropriate exercise.

Linda and her team have produced an excellent help sheet. Click here for the link or visit the website and down load the PDF. http://www.pelvicfloorexercise.com.au

Bursitis in my Knee :(

I did an intense cleaning session at the restaurant that I’m the Chef at and it required a lot of kneeling and vacuuming, about 2 weeks ago.  I think all of the kneeling set off some irritation in my left knee and now when I run over 30 minutes I get this inflamation just below kneecap and slightly to the inside of my leg.   The good thing is, it is not painful.  I have read up on bursitis of the knee, and there are several bursa sacs in the knee.  My particular problem is called

Pes anserinus bursitis

Bursa in the Knee

The remedy is R.I.C.E, (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) so I’ve been taking it easy and doing cross training on the bike and elliptical and running a little less.

Plus, Ice and compression combined with topical NSAID like Traumeel or MSM cream.

Pes Anserine Bursitis Treatment Options for a P.T.

· Have patient refrain from activities which increase symptoms

· Ice Massage/Ice Packs

· Postural Training/Functional Training

· ROM/Stretching

· Strengthening

· Massage/Soft Tissue Mobilization

· Joint Mobilization

· Gait Training

· Orthotics

· Ultrasound/Phonophoresis/Iontophoresis

There is a good site about bursitis at bursitis.org I’m pretty sure that the kneeling episode set it off, but only combined with my high mileage, and poor mechanics on my left leg.  So I am working on stregthening my lower left leg.  Also the rolfing sessions are helping with proper mechanics.

On a “lighter” note…the Christmas season was great but not an ideal setting for losing weight.  Yeah, I put on a couple pounds, but I’m still much lighter than I was at this time last year, by about 10 lbs.  My favorite thing to do after the Holidays is the 5-day Reset, which is a nutritional based weight loss system made by a company that I work with and use.

5 Day RESET Kit

I was 194 this morning before I went to the gym…not good.  I’ll keep you updated on my 5 day results.

I also registered for my first triathlon, albeit an INDOOR tri, I’m excited.  I’m a little worried about the swim though, I haven’t swam for speed in, well, never.  I’ve swam laps before when I was younger, like 20 years ago.  Oh well, you gotta start somewhere right?  I will try to get in a pool before the Jan. 10th event, but it may not happen.  It’s only a 10 minute swim, then 30 min on the bike, then 20 min on the treadmill.  I’ve always wanted to get into Tri’s since I feel like my body type is more suited to that than it is to long distance running.  We’ll see where I stack up with very little training :)

2009: So, how did I do?

This morning was official weigh day, the last of 2009, so I will take this opportunity to have a bit of a look back over my progress this year.

On a small scale, just over the last week, I didn’t do brilliantly with my mini-goals, but it could have been worse. I didn’t exercise everyday, having xmas day and boxing day off, but I did rack up just over two hours and 9.9 km on the treadmill, including two HIIT sessions. Not the 20 km I was aiming for, but more than I’ve done in months. I didn’t log my food intake everyday either, giving up on xmas and not getting back into it. I doubt I maintained a deficit overall, but I gained a mere 0.4 lbs over the week, and all things considered, I’m quite content with that. As for my lifestyle goal, I also didn’t finish sorting out my office, but I made a start, and the rest of the house looks great. So, considering I am zero for three, I’m not entirely sure why I’m so satisfied with my efforts, but there you have it. Could have been a lot worse.

As well as being weigh day today, I also took body measurements so that I could see how I’ve changed since finishing the 5th TT contest, and also so I’ll have a starting point for my 2010 efforts. I’m sorry I didn’t do this at the beginning of the year because I’d love to see how far I’ve come.

Anyhow, since this time last year, my weight loss for 2009 was just shy of two stone and just under 5% body fat. Not earth moving, but the first time in probably 15 years I’ve finished the year weighing less than I started. Could I have lost more? Definitely. But I lost, and when I fell off the exercise and regular healthy eating pattern I still managed to keep it off. My new maintenance weight is now 14 stone instead of 16 stone. I’m pretty damn happy with that. I am a size 18 (down from 20, pushing 22), and my shape has completely changed. Like I said, I don’t have measurements from the start of the year, but I was stunned and pleased to find that I’ve barely changed since finishing TT in August. Since then I have lost 1.5 pounds, no body fat, and gained 1.5 cm on my waist, 1/2 cm on my hips and bicep, and no change on the knee. But I lost 1/2 cm off my thigh and calf.

So there you have it: my first year with blubber gone, and three of my weight loss goals achieved and crossed off the list. Hopefully, just the start of things to come. This year I’ve been motivated by, and would like to thank, Tom Venuto’s Body Fat Solution, Self magazine, Craig Ballantyne’s Turbulence Training, Lou Schuler’s New Rules of Lifting for Women, and all the people on the various forums – thanks for your ongoing support and for being there when I needed you.

Final measurements for 2009 and starting measurements for BBG 2010 are:

  • Weight: 14 stone 0.4 (196.4 lbs, 89.3 kg), 43.4% body fat, and 7 stone 13.2 (111.2 lbs, 50.5 kg) lean body mass
  • Waist: 108 cm
  • Hips: 129.5 cm
  • Left thigh: 63 cm
  • Left knee: 43 cm
  • Left calf: 39.5 cm
  • Left bicep: 39 cm

Why I Recommend Organic Foods To My Weight Loss Patients

By: Dr. John Salerno

I recommend organic foods for my weight loss patients because I want them to eat nutrient dense foods, thus you have to begin with the dirt. The overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical additives for the growth of monoculture genetically modified crops, including corn, soy, rice, canola, and others have wreaked havoc with the soil.

These grain and bean crops grown in this sterile soil are used not only to create overly processed foods, but are the basis for animal feed that is fed to factory farmed meats and farm raised fish. The results are food products with empty calories, unknown long term health effects, and almost certain capacity for making people fat.

Why is this? The ancient wisdom of mankind says you should eat until you are satisfied, and these foods simply don’t satisfy us. Add to that the chemicals added to the so-called value-added foods which are put there to replace the natural goodness that has been lost and you have a real problem.

These food additives, with unpronounceable names and unknown derivatives are known categorically as excitotoxins. Did you ever wonder why Dad could sit down in front of the television to watch the ball game and eat an entire package of corn chips? It’s the Dr. Strangelove additions designed in the lab to make that food so tasty, Dad’s natural satiety switch is turned off.

Those added chemicals, which by the way, even show up on fresh produce that isn’t organic by way of sprays and dips, and chemical baths, can derail any weight loss program. Chemicals can increase food cravings, cause water retention, and can actually cause weight gain. These same additives are often allergenic, and can cause insulin to spike, playing havoc with those people who are pre-diabetic, or diabetic.

When I go back to Italy, where my family is from, I am amazed at how much better the food tastes. Europe does not permit genetically modified crops, and, as a rule, does not support factory farming. Therefore, you can see with your own eyes and taste for yourself the fact that fewer people are overweight, and the food just plain tastes better.

But I am encouraged because a food revolution has begun in this country and people are demanding a more humane treatment of animals, are rejecting high fructose corn syrup, soy products made from genetically modified seed, and are calling for locally grown food products, the so-called locavore movement.

In an article I contributed to in January Men’s Health, I have discussed the cholesterol problem and shown how saturated fat and carb avoidance increase ldl particle size and decrease risk for heart disease and stroke.

Some of my patients have asked why I don’t support a vegetarian diet, given the risks of eating factory farmed meat. The answer to that can be seen in the test tube. I’ve had numerous vegetarian patients who had elevated blood sugars, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems.

The answer which I propose in Dr. Salerno’s Silver Cloud Diet is to eat a nutrient rich diet made up of plenty of saturated fat, protein and fruits and vegetables which are organic, grass fed, and wild caught.

I get a lot of surprised looks from my patients when I tell them to eat more saturated fats to lose weight. They will start in telling me they’ve been eating a low fat diet for years. But they don’t make the connection between this diet and their health problems, including overweight, type two diabetes, memory problems, and arthritis.

I explain to them that the body must have saturated fats for proper brain function, cell development, and satiety. Plus it just makes people look better. Fat carries flavor and makes people feel full and satisfied quicker.

I can spot the low fat dieter in a moment. Dry skin, wrinkles, and broken fingernails. Those are the telltale signs that show. Lab work reveals many more.

So I propose that people eat plenty of saturated fat, protein and organically grown fruits and vegetables for optimum health and weight maintenance. It works for my patients.

Diet Do #4: Create Solutions, Not Resolutions

If you’re like most people, the start of a new year makes you think about all the things you want to change about yourself, all those negative habits you want to overcome or healthful habits you want to incorporate into your life to improve your life. The problem is, despite good intentions, many tend to make resolutions that are idealistic or require drastic changes in eating, fitness, or lifestyle habits.

Some common resolutions including “I’m going on a diet,” “I’m not going to eat bread,” “I’m going to exercise every day,” or “I’m giving up sugar” may in fact help some people jump-start their lives and engage in more healthful (or less harmful) behaviors. But for the most part, rigid or extreme resolutions like these can often set people up for failure and sabotage otherwise good intentions to lose weight, increase muscle mass and lose body fat, or generally improve health.

I am a firm believer that you need to know where you’re going before you can get there. I’m also a big fan of the idea that small changes yield big dividends. So this year, instead of making fast and hard resolutions (such as going on a so-called “diet” ), try to first think about what your specific goals are; maybe you want to lose weight, lower your blood cholesterol or blood pressure, have more energy to run around with your kids, or simply be more physically fit. After identifying one or more general goals, think about the specific steps you can take in order to work towards achieving that goal. For example, if you want to lose weight, you know that consuming fewer calories is one thing that will help you achieve that goal. Perhaps you can start keeping a food journal using your PDA, phone, or a good old-fashioned notebook to record everything you eat or drink for a few days; once you see your eating patterns, you’ll be able to identify the meals or times of day that challenge you or sabotage you most. If, for example, you find you often overeat at dinner, make that the first thing to tackle; take one or more small steps to lighten your caloric load at dinner  (such as eating on smaller plates, cooking a smaller amount of food, minimizing distractions, or ordering less food when dining out). Breaking down goals into small solutions you can employ more often (if not each day) can help you overcome behaviors that undermine your efforts to eat healthfully and mindfully. Taking small steps like this, one at a time, can add up and help your mind and body adapt to your new, improved behaviors and hopefully turn them into life-long habits.

Remember, you don’t have to go it alone…seek a friend, family member, or colleague for support, and contact a health or fitness professional to provide you with the tools to help you create and maintain more healthful habits. A registered dietitian can help you improve your food, nutrition, and lifestyle habits; to find one in your area, contact the American Dietetic Association at www.eatright.org. To get expert help improving your exercise and fitness habits, you can find a reputable personal trainer by contacting organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine (www.acsm.org), the National Strength & Conditioning Association (www.nsca-lift.org), or the American Council on Exercise (www.acefitness.org.)

US Obesity and the Lap Band

Reasons for Obesity:

In the US, obesity has reached epidemic proportions, with over 30% of the population having a BMI over 30. While there are a few medical reasons such as thyroid disorders or other hormonal stimulants of hunger, the vast majority of overweight people have simply eaten more calories than their bodies have burned. People spend a lot of time looking for another explanation for their weight problems, but it is usually pretty straight forward.  By the time you have gained enough weight to be at risk for major health problems, you are faced with losing a tremendous amount of weight. What this means is that in order to lose weight you will have to burn more calories than you take in and by definition, you will be in a state of starvation. This state will stimulate hunger. If healthy weight loss is considered to be about 5 lbs per month, that would mean staying hungry for about 20 months if you were 100 lbs overweight.  While many people can maintain themselves in a state of hunger for awhile, it is hard to keep up and so dieting almost always leads a return to over eating and weight gain. The main issue is eliminating or reducing the drive to eat (hunger or cravings).

While there are multiple factors that have led to our overweight culture, most of the problem, in my opinion, is caused by our nation’s consumption of large amounts of processed, high calorie foods. Healthy menus and low calorie meals are rarely a reason why a restaurant stays in business and low fat, low carbohydrate products didn’t pave the way for the success of our corporate food giants. In fact, it has been the opposite, since adding fat and carbohydrates to food products usually has equated to return customers and fatter bank accounts. And, restaurants stay in business by selling us as much food as possible to each unit (customer), so why not pile on huge portions to justify the cost of the meal. It’s the same as selling two meals for the price of one. The result of being raised in the modern US, is a palate that is used to consuming large portions of high calorie foods.  Again, the key points of this opinion are that America is obese because of the following factors:

1)    Readily available high calorie foods “supplemented” with carbohydrates and fat.

2)    Standard servings of large portions

3)    Repeating 1) and 2) over and over again (What I mean is that, if a person eats large portions of high calorie foods over and over again this behavioral pattern becomes a normal part of the program).

The result is the formation of what many people call habit.  I call it a behavior pattern that is prompted by suffering (hunger) and reinforced or rewarded by the chemical experience of pleasure (satisfaction/satiety). Human beings are “programmed” to repeat behavior that avoids suffering and leads to pleasure. It is the basis for what makes us work, procreate and compete.  Food stimulates the pleasure center of the brain and over time habits are generated by the repeated coming together of “reward” (carbohydrates and fat) with “behavior” (opening up the cookie jar).  For some, it may become fairly hard to walk by the cookie jar without having a physical reaction. So, the environment (cookie jar) stimulates the physical experience of want (craving). If you want to know what I mean, walk into your favorite fast food restaurant when you NOT hungry. Sit there and smell the aroma and see how long it takes you to be become interested in eating. The environment stimulated a memory which then caused your brain to go into the “hunting” mode, which was spurned by the emotion of hunger. The whole experience is chemical and programmable.

So the problem is in how we have been raised. Americans have been “programmed” through repeated exposure to large amounts of high calorie foods to the point where it becomes hard to walk down the street without wanting to eat. Food is EVERYWHERE. Asking an obese person to control his or her eating EVERY DAY and maintain that is a little bit like torture.

Understanding why people are obese is the main reason why I have been such a staunch advocate of the lap band. I recommend it to all of my obese patients regardless of whether or not they go out of the country for their surgery.  Here is why:

Every dietary program is extremely simple and based on the following principles.

1)    Reduce portion size

2)    Eat foods low in carbohydrates and fat

3)    Decrease total calories

(But, what do we do about our hunger?)

Yet despite all of our efforts, diet and exercise alone has a long term 3% success rate. I hate to be negative, but it is almost a waste of time. As a society, we spend massive amounts of money unsuccessfully lose weight. What we need is to have our brains rewired to that of a person that is not stimulated to want to eat at every turn in life.  We need brains that are satisfied and content ( and not hungry) with eating smaller portions of healthy foods.

Here is how the lap band works:

A surgeon places an inflatable adjustable band around the top portion of your stomach. The result is that the stomach is divided into two chambers separated by a small channel (the width of the channel is determined by the “tightness” of the band). The upper portion of the stomach is very small, only enough to hold about 5 ounces of food.

So here is what happens when you have a lap band in place that is working correctly: You sit down at the dinner table and begin eating.  You are instructed to chew your food slowly and eat your meal over 20 minutes. You start to eat and an amazing thing happens, after only eating four ounces of food (about the size of a deck of cards), you FEEL FULL (emotion). You feel like you just ate a big meal. And, you are not hungry (emotion) any more. And, if you have followed directions and did not drink any liquids with your meal, the food stays in the upper stomach pouch for the next hour or two, giving you the constant sensation of satisfaction (emotion). If you repeat this behavior over and over again; feel hungry, eat a small amount of food-feel satisfied an interesting thing happens; you become completely comfortable eating a small amount of food. It becomes “normal” to you; you have become reprogrammed.

Also, what if we gave you a negative experience whenever you eat too much? This would be a lot like scolding a child when it did something wrong or getting fired from your job because you were late all the time. Negative reinforcement is a fairly good training tool (but positive is better). How about we make you feel nauseated every time you eat too fast or eat too much? Walla! The lap band does that too! Try to eat more than the pouch will hold and your stomach will stretch triggering the brain to give you the sensation of nausea (i.e. telling you to stop eating) and if you keep it up, you will vomit.

There are some things that the lap band cannot control, so you do have to participate. You will be instructed to eat low carb, low fat foods. The rule is that you maintain a 2:1 protein to carbohydrate ratio. That means eat a lot of chicken and fish.

Over time, if you “follow” the band, i.e.

1)    Chew your food slowly over 20 minutes

2)    Limit your total intake with each meal to about 4 ounces

3)    Don’t drink liquids with your meals

4)    Eat a high protein diet, maintaining a 2:1 protein to carbohydrate ratio.

You, will be successful and the weight will start “falling off”.

If you understanding how the band works, you might also understand how you can “beat the band”, and not lose weight.

Remember our goal is low carbohydrate foods in small portions. The band works by restricting the passage of food from the stomach to the intestines where it will be absorbed. The longer the food stays “hung up” in the upper portion of the stomach pouch, the longer you will stay satisfied. So, the first obvious way to beat the band is to drink your calories. A soda or milk shake is full of carbohydrates and calories and will pass right by the band. Ice cream passes right through.  If you chew your food and drink water to “wash it down” the band is useless. You can eat small amounts of high carbohydrate foods all day long and never lose any weight.

So, the right “band patient” is a patient that has the ability to follow a meal plan and stick to it. The band will make it EXTREMELY easy for you to be successful, by eliminating the constant hunger of everyday life, but you must be willing to “follow” a few simple rules to be successful.

Consideration before Lap Band procedure:

Electing to have lap band surgery requires proper consideration of alternatives, understanding the risks and rewards with your surgeon. For successful results with this surgery emotions need to be kept aside and proper preparation for surgery and post operative care needs to be arranged.

The guidelines for surgical candidacy are based on the saving lives not on helping you lose weight for cosmetic reasons. People with BMI’s greater than 35 have shorter life spans on average, so the lap band is considered a “life saving” medical intervention. When your BMI is less than 35, there is less conclusive evidence that we are saving lives by performing this surgery. At least, it is not considered cost effective to perform surgery on patients with a BMI less than 35.

If you have severe depression, bipolarism, personality disorder or other severe psychiatric illness and are obese, you many have a very difficult time losing weight. Any surgery for obesity is not recommended unless your psychiatric illness is under control with medication.

Qualifications for Lap Band surgery:

According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Obesity Society, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, current guidelines for candidacy are:

1)    a BMI of at least 35

2)    Patients must have tried and failed non surgical weight loss efforts (diet and exercise)

3)    Must be willing and able to adhere to a post operative program that includes following a meal plan.

4)    There can be no current alcohol or drug abuse.

5)    There can be no current or uncontrolled severe psychiatric illness.

6)    There must be no underlying medical reason for obesity (thyroid or other hormonal)

7)    All patients must understand the risks, benefits, possible adverse outcomes, alternatives, and necessary lifestyle changes associated with the surgery.

Still, based on the merits of any individual case, some US surgeons do choose to operate on patients with a BMI less than 35. Risks and benefits must be fully understood before placing a lap band on a patient with a BMI between 30 and 35.

Financial consideration and qualification for insurance coverage are some other major factors which need to be considered before surgery in the US.

Description of the Lap Band Surgery:

The LAGB utilizes a synthetic fluid-filled, doughnut-shaped band, which is wrapped around the top portion of the stomach. A small port is attached to the band by a thin piece of synthetic tubing and the port is surgically placed just under the skin on the abdomen. The port is therefore easily accessed so that a healthcare professional can inject or remove sterile saline from time to time to adjust the size of the band.  This ability to adjust the restrictive nature of the band has eliminated the need for revision surgery that used to be necessary with the VGB procedure. In addition, the stomach is not cut so there is minimal risk of leaking from the stomach. LAGB is the safest of all bariatric procedures and carries a very low 0-0.05% mortality rate. Because the lap band is very simple to perform the cost is generally much more affordable.  Weight loss with the LAGB is 42% at one year and about 55% at five years.  Weight loss tends to be more gradual compared to gastric bypass procedures but at five years the comparative weight loss between the two types of surgery is nearly identical.

Considerations:

It is very important that you understand that getting a lap band is not a guarantee that you will lose weight. Again, you must be willing and able to follow a meal plan to be successful.

Risks and adverse outcomes:

1)    Band slippage: Rare.  More common with repeated vomiting.

2)    Band Erosion in the stomach: Rare.

3)    Clogging of the port or tubing: Rare.

4)    Dilation of the Esophagus: Rare.

5)    Heartburn/Esophagitis: more common. Especially if the band is too tight or if there is overeating.

6)    Standard universal risks for surgery; i.e. Infection, bleeding, blood clot, heart attack, stroke, etc. (to be discussed with the surgeon in Mexico). Rare.

Burn Belly Fat ...Or Die?

Woman Eating Healthy FoodIt has been discovered that belly fat isn’t only repulsive – it’s also life threatening.  Therefore, learning the way to burn belly fat and dispose of your tummy fat must be your highest priority if you would like to stay healthy.

One sensible approach to know if your belly fat is approaching the at risk zone is take your waist’s measurement. Next you’ll compare this measurement to your height. If the circumference of your waist is greater than half your height, you’re at elevated risk of diabetes, and ought to beginto take steps to burn belly fat.

The most effective method to start out obtaining rid of your extra tummy fat is to combine a diet that is high in complicated carbohydrates and protein with resistance training to create muscle.

Healthy FoodsWhen you eat a diet low in sugar, conjointly known as a low glycemic diet, can facilitate your body regulate insulin levels by slowing down the rate that the carbohydrates in food are converted into glucose. All carbohydrates aren’t bad. It’s simply overly processed carbohydrates and sugars that ought to be removed from your diet.

Smart carbs contain things like whole vegetables and some fruits, such as cabbage, kale, peppers, citrus fruits, and blueberries. Legumes, nuts and seeds are also examples of good carbs that can facilitate your body in it’s natural capacity to burn belly fat. Whole grains are included in the list of “good carbs”. These are the quality carbohydrates that offer a slow, steady release of glucose into your bloodstream as they’re processed by your body.

Be aware that some kinds of empy carbs that should be eliminated from your diet. When consumed, these are the foods that are almost instantly converted into glucose, creating a fast spike in blood sugar levels. And, sad to say, these are a big part of almost all Western diets. Included is things like drinks containing sugar (even natural juice) baked goods like pastries and cakes and breaded foods. Another big-time offender is potatoes, because they are quickly turned by your body into sugar soon after they are ingested. Furthermore, did you understand that after you eat white flour and white rice that they are turned to sugar as quickly as if you had eaten a spoon of table sugar?

Health Food

Yes, our bodies do need glucose for energy and proper brain function. However we need a gradual supply of this glucose. Fast delivery from eating junk food results in mood swings and other serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease.

As soon as  steps to abolish empty carbohydrates from what you eat, your body can begin to deal with foods as it absolutely was designed to do. You will see  it isn’t that difficult to burn belly fat after all.

SO FAR! = 57.14 % OF WAY TO GOAL!

Mission maintain is going amazingly well seeing as I am not really doing anything …in fact I am still managing to lose a little weight without doing anything.  What’s up with that?

I shouldn’t complain but it does seem weird to me.  I have done zero exercise as I a) haven’t had time and b) am experiencing quite a lot of sciatic nerve pain lately.  I have noticed that I approach food quite differently now.  Eating slowly without thinking, picking at my food and taking rests in between bites…basically eating more like a thin person does?  Well it’s great and I am so so happy to nearly be done with silly season and no have it gotten the better of me!  My desire to be under 80kg by New Year will not happen but that’s OK.  Back to serious healthy eating and exercise (leg pain permitting) very soon.

Have a lovely day with your families and friends.  Well done to all of you who will enter the new year weighing less and feeling lighter!  2010 we will reach our goals.  Exciting!!!

Looking For the Skinny in Organic Food

I have to admit, I don’t know much about organic food. I know it through biased broadstrokes that really aren’t fact-based: it’s supposed to be more nutritionally advantageous, supposed to carry less pesticides and chemicals, and supposed to be better for me in a sparkly, bluebirds-flying-around-my-head kind of way. By nature, I am a skeptical person; I am not one to pursue a trend just because society tells me to do it, nor am I inclined to just believe right off the bat.

Cavemen
You’d think they had it good…

The one thing I know for sure about organic food: it’s more expensive. Whether it’s a carton of eggs or produce, it costs more to purchase organic food at the supermarket or at a farmer’s market.

My question: is it really worth it? Or, is organic food just a trend- a recruitment call from orthorexic hypochondriacs and militant, flatulent vegans?

So, as I exercise and attempt to lose weight constructively, I’m looking to figure this out for myself. And, since this is the only body I have for however long my life lasts, I should stop looking at organic food advocates as histrionic freaks who can’t live without Whole Foods so I can make an informed decision about organic eating. Because, regardless of whether I make fun of them or not, I have to wonder: are pesticides or hormones partially responsible for me being overweight, or how I metabolize any kind of food? Despite a budget increase, will eating organically produced food produce a desirable fitness-related difference?

Or, is it a big, fat joke?

Organic Food
Maybe it’s a CONSPIRACY.

So far, the first source I’ve checked out is a Washington Post blog, which contends that organically produced food does not offer any nutritional advantages over conventionally produced food. Additionally, this Redbook article points out- without much fancy-language argument- that organic foods are healthy choices, but not definitively nutritionally advantageous over conventionally produced food.

However, neither article really addresses the issue of pesticides and chemical consequences, which is the true appeal behind organic food, and especially in fruits and veggies. Thankfully, the Redbook article includes a link to Food News, which is a terrific source with which I- or anyone- can make more informed decisions about organic foods. It contains a list of foods most affected by pesticides, so if (like me), you’re a budget-conscious consumer, you can decide how to approach organic food game one item at a time.

That said, I am not completely convinced that conventional food will cause me to die, or that the pesticides in my food really will cause horrible health choices down the road. But, surprisingly enough, I came upon a reason to support organic food that doesn’t necessarily relate to my waistline: supporting American farmers and local sustainability over cheaper and possibly less-quality imports.

Since I’m one who likes supporting small businesses over bigger chains that provide a lesser quality product, I would be glad to buy an organic. This, to me, feels like a good reason to start buying organic and frequenting farmer’s markets: helping a community of small businesses survive is a pretty good thing to do, especially in our economy. (If you’re interested in doing the same, find a Farmer’s Market in your area through Local Harvest.)

So, thanks to doing a little research, I think the organic bandwagon is worth sampling and learning more about. Though there are still health-food hypochondriacs out there who drive me nuts, the organic movement is not just about them jingling bells of green propaganda, but understanding that it’s a question of conscientious economics. For now, the choice to eat organic does not appear to be an automatic health benefit, but it will help keep small businesses alive and enable some local sustainability. I am not convinced that spending a little extra money will prevent me from coming down with cancer, but that I can help a worthy farm purveyor keep going.

This article is the first of what I anticipate will be a few more musings about organic food. As I continue to educate myself, I’ll share what I know. If anyone has any great sources to turn to, as well as more compelling reasons to be a definitive organic advocate, I’m open to hearing them.

Thanks for reading :-)

No Food Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels

I was working with a client this morning that said this quote to me.  I’m not sure where it comes from but I thought it was a great line.  I started to realized that this probably isn’t true for everyone.  If you are overweight and read that statement and do not think it is true then it says something about you.  You are not at a point where you want to improve your health.  If you aren’t willing to make a few sacrifices then you will not succeed with a weight loss program.

Anyone that says it was easy for them to lose weight is probably lying or has never had a weight issue.  You cannot lose weight without making a complete adjustment to your life.  You have to give certain things up completely and cut back on others.  What do you think when you read that statement.  If you think being skinny would be a better feeling than it does to eat your favorite food then it is time to do something about it.  If you read it and still don’t think being skinny is that rewarding then you probably will remain overweight for a little while longer.  When you are willing to give up certain things you are ready to start your weight loss journey.

Successfully Control Your Food Cravings

The most difficult part for many people trying to lose unwanted fat, is the challenge of overcoming food cravings. You may have a friend or two that can just say “no” and control food cravings just with determination, but for most of us it is not that easy. Here are several tips to help you achieve your goal by winning over your food cravings:

1. Plan your diet:- You can plan your diet ahead with a list of the food and drinks that you are allowed to consume.

2. Make it a habit to avoid bad foods:- One practical way to avoid the food that is not good for you, is to clean your fridge from these foods. Be sure to only stock up on those that are on the “allowed foods” lit.

3. Eat some nuts:- Studies show that food cravings tend to pass by if you snack on nuts and drink water in between meals. Be sure to stock up on nuts and bottled water at home, in the office and even on the go.

4. Take that afternoon nap:- You should take power naps because food cravings actually sneak up when we are tired. Make sure that you do not reach the end of the line when it comes to physical and mental tiredness.

5. Distractions:- When you feel the craving sneaking in, do something you like – read a book, call a loved one, exercise, listen to music or meditate.

6. You can “cheat” sometimes:- When you avoid your favorite foods for long periods, you can crave for more because of the feeling of self deprivation. You can indulge in small portions of your favorite foods at set times.

Low Carb Got me Slim the First Time

Weight loss is a personal and selfish journey, in the

sense that you have to do want you have to do to reach

your goal. There may be a lot fewer lunches and dinners w

with friends, less drinking and partying and special or

unique dinners at home for yourself.

I had success losing weight and it was because I

participated in the forums of the low carb site of Kimkins.

Now, I need to do it again and hopefully for the very last

time.   Music was helpful to me. Before I lost enough

weight to feel comfortable exercising in public, I danced

around my home.  Softer music like Jaheim, old Sade,

Michael Franks and old Maxwell soothed me in stressful

times.  A lot of the other artists got me pumped up when

I needed to get out and walk.  Old Fabolous songs like

Breathe and now his new ‘pump me up’ anthem,’

My Time and others similar to this got me pumped as

well.  Nas’ Classic, Gang Starr and older Outkast were

some of my ‘pump up’ artists and I can not leave out

Fantasia.  When I wanted to dance, I used a lot of the

Latin music that I will ease in here a little at the time.

Losing weight can be down.  I have done it before.  In

hindsight, there are things that I know to do differently

and I will  this time.

A Journey of a Thousand Miles...

When Clay was born last November, I weighed 265 pounds.  Mind you, I am six feet tall, and that weight was including the baby I carried, but that was little consolation.  Looking back on my high school days, when I was a beanpole and quasi-athletic, I realized that I could easily afford to lose 100 pounds and still be heavier than I was back then.  No matter how hard I tried to be loving and compassionate with myself, my self-esteem and confidence were suffering more than my joints and back.  At only 22 years old I could not accept that I had already bid goodbye to my young slim body.  Stretch marks? “Muffin top?” Jeans sizes pushing the 20’s?  It was more than I could stand.  Luckily Jeff did his best to accept me and remain positive about my new body.  After all, it nourished and delivered a healthy baby, which is a very respectable thing for a body to do.  Nonetheless, the weight simply had to go.  Thus began my “thousand mile journey” to get fit and healthy.

Breastfeeding exclusively and taking Clay for walks in the stroller helped me to lose 30 pounds in the first few months.  I really wasn’t watching my diet, in fact, I was constantly ravenous and ate more than I did while pregnant.  I hit a plateau around 230 pounds which lasted several months.  Summer came and I decided to start walking regularly outdoors.  There’s a loop of road near my house with a well maintained sidewalk that is exactly 3 miles.  Walking this loop consistently for a month helped me shed another 15 pounds.

I’m not sure what exactly stumbled me with my walking plan, but from August till November of this year, I have been yo-yo-ing between 205 and 215 pounds.  A few weeks ago, on November 30, an idea came to me.  I would train for a marathon!  Why not?  Goals are very helpful to me, I need a “finished product” to work toward.  After choosing a race next year and much more research, my plan was revised to train for a half-marathon.  Burning out and quitting isn’t an option for me, so it made sense to take it slow.  I suppose I could always do more down the road if it’s reasonable.

Donning some too-tight workout garb, I handed Jeff the camera and had him take some photos of me from all angles.  We whipped out the measuring tape and measured my thighs, waist, chest, hips, arms, neck, calves… you get the picture.  Then I hit the internet to find myself a TRAINING SCHEDULE.  Just the thought of sharing my plan with friends and family made my heart race.  How cool am I?  Little Mrs. Elite (half) Marathon trainer.  Really though, you can’t beat family and friends in the accountability department.

Anyhow, knowing that I have somewhat of an all-or-none personality, I decided to temper it by beginning with the “Couch to 5k” program.  By all-or-none, I mean that a year ago, training for a half marathon would have meant going from the “couch” to trying to run a full 13.something miles right off the bat.  And then I would have crashed and burned, and with much dejection and embarrassment, given up altogether.  Training for a 5k would be a great start, I figure.  The program takes nine weeks.   Piece of cake!  I ran cross country in high school and raced 5k regularly, although not well, as I never trained in the off season and was really only on the team for the friends.  Oh, and my mom ran cross country and wanted me to also.  But this time, I am running for the right reason: for myself.  And I know I have it in me.  High School wasn’t that long ago.  Moving on.

After beginning my training program, I came across the Leukemia and Lymphomia Society’s Team in Training.   My mom beat a very serious case of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma last year, so this opportunity is absolutely perfect for me.  Talk about two birds and one stone; I can get help and motivation training for my race, while raising money for the LLS.  The first meeting is in January, and I can’t wait to begin.  As of right now, I am on “Week Two” of my Couch to 5k (aka, C25K) program and going strong.  The half marathon I will be running is next June.  Think I will be able to finish?

There have been obstacles already, as can be expected.  It’s December in Alaska, and a cold one at that.  It’s been below 10 degrees, and boy do my knees feel it!  When Jeff is home, he watches the baby so I can run out in the cold.  But he was gone in Virginia for a week, so it was Treadmill Time for me (Clay is tough, but I don’t think he would appreciate the jogging stroller at these temps.  haha).  Thankfully my parents had a spare treadmill, and it does the trick.  Understatement.  It’s heavenly!  No more gym memberships for me.  I can listen to my C25K podcast and run right in my living room.  I start week 3 tomorrow.  The last two weeks has only seen a one pound loss, but hey, it’s the holidays and I’ve had cookie exchanges to bake for :-)  I am trying to cut myself a little slack.  Now if only I can get over the “adequate sleep” obstacle… it’s 1:20 a.m. and I haven’t been able to sleep before 3 a.m. all week.  And hungry babies don’t sleep in!  On a positive note, Clay is a great wake-up call for me to get up and get on that treadmill.

This is not a designated “weight loss blog”, but getting in shape is becoming a big part of my life and therefore will be an occasional topic here.

Current Weight: 205

Target Weight: 155 (or so)

Weight lost to date: 60 pounds

Weight loss to go: 50 pounds

Click here for my “SparkPage“, which isn’t current, but it is my weight loss blog of sorts.

Note: I have pictures for you- will post them as soon as I figure out how!

How To Gain Muscle And Burn

What is your “big dream?”

I have two:

– To make an impact on the lives of over 10M people before I die;

– To have a family that’s mobile so I can live in many places.

Not bad, right?

Want to know a “third” dream of mine?  One that I saw become a reality a few years ago?

To gain muscle AND burn bodyfat all at the same time.

It’s like a pipe-dream that somehow worked its way through the pipes and into my gym.

It is not easy, granted, but you can do it.

Almost anyone can do it.

You just have to train and eat in a very specific way.

Listen:  You do NOT want to just “burn bodyfat” or god-forbid “lose-weight”… that will not give you the body you want.

You absolutely MUST shape your muscles, tighten and tone, and burn bodyfat.

And you can do it at the same time.

Most pros disagree with me. They think it is metabolically impossible to gain muscle while in a state of low-calorie dieting.

They are wrong.

Here’s an article I wrote on this topic. I hope you enjoy it.

To save you time, I put a link to the online complete version of the article below…

- – - – -

I remember a friendly argument with my co-author of Fit Over 40 Tom Venuto. It all started when I told Tom how I was eating and training for my last peak. A peak is where you lower your bodyfat and try to maintain as much muscle mass as possible.

“There’s just no way I could ever get in shape eating and training like that,” says Tom. “Sure you could man…what are you, a mutant?” Tom fires back, then me, then Tom….and so it goes. (I really didn’t call Tom a mutant. That was creative liberty.)

So why are so many fitness pros like Tom freaked out about my training and nutrition plan? Simple: I claim it burns fat while building muscle at the same time. Every time I read an article by some doctor or expert claiming it’s “biologically impossible” to gain lean muscle mass on a hypocaloric diet (a diet low in calories) I just laugh.

I do more than make claims–I have proved this to be true many times. I’ve had my bodyfat hydrostatically measured during several peaks. In all but one I showed an increase of muscle mass and a decrease of bodyfat during a 12-16 week period. The one time I didn’t show an increase in muscle mass when was I was training the most in the gym. That may not make sense right now, but it will in a moment.

Well Crap

Hello?

I think everyone who read my blog ran away :( Probably because I don’t really post anymore…

Well I finished my final project for the 4/5th grade endorsement to add to my license. Done. Fine. I passed. Now I need to figure out if I care enough to take the Praxis, or if I’m going to wait it out.

I put in my cover letter to be considered for the Superintendent’s Stipend Opportunity. If you can prove that your students have made growth for the last two years, then you can throw your name in the ring to be considered for a $4,000 stipend. The catch is that you have to also agree to be “placed at the superintendent’s discretion.” That means you’ll be placed in a “high needs” school. This is the first year for the program and there wasn’t a lot of information. Unfortunately, my school will probably be closing at the end of this school year so I was going to have to change schools anyways. Why not take the opportunity to be placed where I’m really needed and make and extra $4k? Also, I think I’m going to apply for the Leadership Intern (principal) program with the district. Since only 37 teachers applied for the stipend opportunity, it will look great on my resume and put my name in a positive light in the superintendent’s mind. Win win I say. Of course I say that now….ask me again next year :)

Overall things are going good. I’m down below my goal weight. I’m running at least 10 miles per week. Last weekend Noah tricked me into running 6.5 miles instead of 4 so…while it sucked, at least I know that I am capable of running it. 6 miles was my ultimate, not running any further than this goal and I guess I already achieved that…Noah and I are considering doing a couple duathleons next summer. Maybe a bit of traveling involved. My cousins live in Amsterdam right now and they offered for us to stay in their apartment this summer rent free while they are back in the states. So we’re trying to figure out how to get the money together to do that. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience!

And….I love the holidays, I love candy, I love decorations. Things are good. How are you y’all? If y’all are even still out there….

The Fastest Way to Burn Fat - What's The Best Way To Burn Body Fat Fast?

Okay, so you trying to find out what the fastest way to burn fat is. Well, I’m glad you found this article, because this information could really help you.

Exercise First Thing

By exercising in the morning before you’ve even had any breakfast, for between 30 and 60 minutes, you will burn up more fat than if you exercise at any other time. In fact, studies have shown that exercising at this time is up to 3 times more effective at burning fat.

Why?

During the night, as you’re sleeping, you body uses up all the energy it got from food the previous day. It needs all that energy from the food for all the repair and maintenance functions that happen during sleep. So, by morning, all the energy from food has been used up. This means that the body must use fat for energy until you eat more food.

Also, your metabolism (the rate at which you burn calories) is revved up by doing this morning exercise. Your metabolism stays at this revved up state for the rest of the day, and therefore more calories are burned.

Exercise Tip

To burn even more fat, add a second workout later in the day, about 4-6 hours after your early morning one. If you decide to do this, make the morning exercise a cardio workout, and make the second exercise a weight training exercise. Also remember: muscle burns fat.

Always Have Breakfast

After doing your morning exercise workout, you must always eat breakfast. Why is this? Well, the main reason is that it gives an additional boost to your metabolism. It also provides your body with the nutrients and energy it needs.

Think of your metabolism as being like a fire. By adding plenty of fuel to the fire at the beginning of the day, you set it going for burning hot all day long. Eating breakfast also reduces cravings later on in the day.

Extra Nutrition Tip

To help keep your metabolism fire burning all throughout the day, try to eat smaller meals more frequently rather than having 3 large meals a day. Think in terms of spreading the same calories intake of 3 meals across 5 or 6 smaller meals.

The underlying inclination to insulin resistance is not lost, and weight loss must continue. Overweight patients treated with metformin compared with diet alone, had relative risk reductions of 32 per cent for any diabetes endpoint, 42 per cent for diabetes related death and 36 per cent for all cause mortality and stroke. Insulin therapy is de rigueur to maintain common or near common glucose levels. Gestational diabetes mellitus resembles type 2 diabetes in several respects, involving a pairing of relatively inadequate insulin secretion and responsiveness.
About 20 per cent 50 per cent of affected women develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Risks to the baby include macrosomia, deep-seated cardiac and central uneasy system anomalies, and skeletal muscle malformations.
In fact the rate of diabetes in expectant mothers has more than doubled in the chronological 6 years.

Weight loss diet supplement with a difference

Weight loss diet supplement with a difference
If you are aiming for weight loss and searching for a product that will help you shed that extra flab; you have a tough job in hand. That too, if you are looking for a diet supplement that will do the job for you, you are in a fix.
There are numerous products available in stores and across the counter. Each one makes tall claims for its effectiveness. It is sure to leave you dumbfounded if you want to select one product or food supplement that suits you. Most of the diet supplements are concentrated at body building; and the ones that target weight loss leaves you feeling and looking weak.
Amidst this circus of products, the one that stands out is Nutrex  “Lipo-6 weight  loss”  .
What makes Nutrex Lipo-6 different?
• It is manufactured by Nutrex, a well known company that has expertise in such products. Many of Nutrex clients stand testimony to its effectiveness in reducing weight and increasing muscle tone.
• It contains Bioperine, a patented formula. It is safer than many other formulae used in various attractive products.
• It is in liquid capsule form, whereas others are solid tablet. Many users find solid capsules troublesome to intake.
• Liquid ingredients work faster in the body as they are quickly absorbed.
• It goes well with other exercise regimes, like weight training and cardio exercises.
• It suits all diet plans.
Nutrex claims that the main advantage of Lipo-6 is its liquid contents that are readily absorbed in the body. The time required for solid material to get dissolve in the body is done away with; thereby making Lipo-6 a fast acting and efficient supplement. It proves more beneficial if taken along with weight lifting and cardio workouts.
How it works?
Bioperine content in Lipo-6 attacks the fat stored at various body parts. In addition it controls appetite and reduces craving for food. It enhances stamina by improving blood circulation in the body. This leaves you looking young and energetic. Each capsule also contains Synephrine, a comparatively safer substance and a thyroid stimulant Guggulsterones.  Bioperine, a patented ingredient ensures better nutrient absorption into the body.
 A word of caution
Though ” Lipo-6 weight loss”  is one of the safest supplements available; one must consult a physician or dietician before incorporating it into your diet. It has shown to cause dizziness and headaches among some users. It gives the best results if taken along with weight lifting and cardio exercises. Surprisingly, the product does not give details about its ingredients.

Day 84

Last work out was tonight.  Everyone was in high spirits and full of laughter and jokes.  It was fun and the time went by very fast.  A couple weeks ago I was thinking that twelve weeks was a long time.  Tonight I was thinking it went by very fast and I was sad that it was over.

The goal of this whole project was to save lives including my own.  By helping folks see that what they eat, how they move and how they think effects their lives.  I had commented a month ago that A was told by his doctor that if he continues on this path that he should be able to get off some of his medications.  He informed us tonight that he is off his diabetes medication.  It brought tears to my eyes.  Goal accomplished.  At times the whole project was tiresome for myself, Mike and Jared.  Tonight at dinner we all agreed that with the news of A reducing his medication it was all worth it. Next month A is hoping to be off the blood pressure medication.

Tomorrow is the final weigh in and awards.  It will be a bitter-sweet night.

Till tomorrow – here’s to saved lives.

No excuses

I’ve been really slack of late. I’m playing around with my diet – a little good stuff, a little junk, and ordering in far too often when there is food already in the house and no excuse at all. I did manage to do a little exercise last week, but had that two and a half hours by Thursday, and despite being home early on Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday, didn’t do a lick more. It really isn’t good enough. My weight is holding steady but I am fed up of this and want to make some more progress. New goal for the week. Eat clean for the rest of the week. Do at least two resistance sessions, at least one interval session, and at least three hours in total exercise. No more excuses.

Welcome to my Dieting Adventure

Ok, so i at long last understood out how to produce a blog.

I really came online to check out plastic surgery options but I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. So I decided to find before and after photos without surgery. I finished up here.

Truthfully, I'm afraid to lose weight. I hate the way I look right now. So much so that I have horrible thoughts. I'm just frightened that even if I eat right and exercise on a regular basis and lose the weight that I will still feel the same. I'm worried that my skin will be really loose. I already have so many stretch marks and saggy skin as it is. I lost some weight a few years ago but ended because of the fearfulness and noticing the lack of elasticity of my skin. I'm 165cm (5'4). The biggest i've been is 92kg (203 pounds) and i'm currently 78kgs (172). I want to be 57kgs (125). I would really love to just be able to buy clothes without it being a big drama. The only parts of my body that don't have to be covered are my forearms, neckline and head. It makes dressing a bit hard. I should really move to a cool climate. haha. Anyway, I'm just terrified it would all be for nothing and that dressing will still be just as hard but for different reasons. That's just how I feel.

Friction is a fat girls worst enemy...

It’s true!  I gotta find some better workout pants.  See, this is what I mean by excuses.  It’s too easy to find one.  So, I’ll be taking my ass to Fred Meyer’s to get a pair of “fit” pants.  Yikes.  Slightly terrifying; I am the largest person at my 24 Hour Fitness.  It doesn’t bug me too much because it’s the one place I can be sweaty and no one looks at me like I have a big booger hanging out of my nose.

This week has been good but I didn’t meet my first goal which was to hit the gym 5-6 times a week.  I think I’ve been 4 times since I last wrote.  I’ll weigh in the morning.  I haven’t really adjusted my food yet but this next week I’ll be cutting out all fluids and one cup of coffee in the morning, one sugar instead of two.  I really, really, really enjoy my coffee.  I sing the Foldgers commercial song every time I pour, if not out loud then in my head.  I can look at our coffee maker and think to myself, “Now, that’s a promise of a new day”.  It’s completely apart of my daily ritual.  So, for now it’s only going to be one cup a day.  :(

I need new workout music.  I gotta have the beats to forget the work.

This is one of my favorite songs to walk to because the beat fits perfectly with my pace, so much so that I swing my hips a little when it plays.

Weight Loss Problems? Why Gastric Bypass Surgery Doesn't Work!

Gastric bypass surgeries are temporary physical fixes to a long term mental/emotional problem! If you think the surgery is a cure-all, think again. The crazy thing is some people are gaining more weight on purpose so they can qualify to even be considered for the surgery. How sick is that?

My aunt had gastric bypass surgery last year. She was so excited about the new body she was going to have after the surgery. She just couldn’t wait for her new life to begin. This was an answer to her prayers. So she thought!

Up until then, my aunt had not exercised a day in her life. She never followed a sensible eating plan, nor did she want to. By the looks of them, none of my family had ever sacrificed anything in the way of food. The doctors had filled her head with “results” that were only possible, not even probable. Her children were totally delusional about their mom’s weight and had danced around the issue so much that my aunt was in total denial. And guess what? True to form, she gained the weight back in eight months. Why?

The answer: you can’t build a house on a foundation made of sand. If you don’t deal with what is underneath the surface of your emotional behavior toward eating and exercise, you will go right back to the beginning, no matter what you take out or do to your body. Surgery or no surgery, there is no cure-all for being overweight. However, there is a solution — do you want to hear it? Here it is:

  1. Decide how you are motivated.
  2. Determine your underlying reasons for your eating and exercise behaviors or lack thereof.
  3. Develop the best support system to promote your own personal success.
  4. Deal with the emotions behind your eating patterns.
  5. Dedicate yourself to an exercise program.

Maybe the surgery works in the short run. And maybe that will buy you some time and give you some inspiration to start exercising and eating better. However, surgery is not a means to an end! It doesn’t change your head; it only changes your stomach. If you do decide to have the surgery, please understand that without deep changes in your thought process and exercise habits, the gastric bypass surgery “results” will not stick.
