You took away my womb...

Breasts, uterus and vagina – The making of a woman. But what happens when one or all become defunct? Hysterectomy involves major surgery, but probably the aftercare will be just as important if not more important than the actual operation. Whatever the reason is for surgery the emotional turmoil women go through is far worse that the actual physical side. Support from friends and families are paramount.

We would like to thank Linda McClelland one of Australias leading physiotherapists for the following information about  hysterectomy’s

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of a woman’s uterus or womb. There are various reasons for why your gynaecologist may perform hysterectomy surgery and a range of different hysterectomy procedures that may be used:

  • A total hysterectomy (or complete hysterectomy) involves the surgical removal of the uterus and cervix (ring of muscle at the base of the uterus)
  • A partial hysterectomy (or subtotal hysterectomy) involves the surgical removal of the uterus without removing the cervix. Further reading click here

You can minimise the risk of post operative hysterectomy complications and avoid some potential side effects of a hysterectomy through rest and appropriate exercise.

Linda and her team have produced an excellent help sheet. Click here for the link or visit the website and down load the PDF. http://www.pelvicfloorexercise.com.au

This is a recording of a live hysterectomy operation. The video is around 1 hr and is extremly explicit. With thanks to ORlive.com for supplying this video.
