The Best and Worst Beverages for Weight Loss

For those of us still holding strong to our New Year’s Resolutions of maintaining a healthy diet; one consumption item that tends to slip our minds because we are not actually “eating” it is beverages.

Average Americans get one-fifth of their daily calories from beverages.  Choosing the right drinks can boost metabolism, curb your appetite, and reduce your total calorie count.

Helpers!

Water: drinking water before meals also may encourage the stomach to feel full more quickly, making you eat much less.  Water’s other benefits are having a positive effect on your metabolism, energy, and it’s great for your skin.

Vegetable juice: is every bit as nutritious as fruit juice with about half the calories.

Coffee: when you need a shot of caffeine, coffee is better than soda or energy drinks, black coffee is calorie-free and rich in antioxidants.

Green Tea: is an excellent choice when looking for a little caffeine.  It also can promote weight loss because it contains plant based compounds that temporarily cause the body to burn calories.

Spoilers!

Soda: is full of hundreds of empty calories, meaning your body is getting no nutritional benefit out of them.  According do the Center for Science in the Public Interest, carbonated soft drinks are the single largest source of calories in the American diet.

Cocktails: hard liquor has less calories than beer or wine, but once you start mixing sodas, cream, and mixes…watch out!

Fancy Coffee: once you add heavy cream and flavored syrups, and innocent cup of coffee becomes chock full of sugar and calories!

In between.

Fruit juice: it can have as many calories as soda, but has far more vitamins and nutrients to offer the body in return.  The best way is to look for 100% real juice, avoid extra sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Fruit smoothies: the best way to go is with homemade kind to avoid unnecessary fat and sugar.  Fresh fruit, and non-fat milk or yogurt is all you need.
