We all know that it is important to be as healthy as we can be. If you truly want to be healthy you should add aerobics into your work out, if you don’t do it already. Even though some people like to target different parts of their bodies when it comes to aerobics, is also very important that you have a routine that works on each of your body parts as a whole.
When you are working on your entire body, there are several things that you have to keep in mind. First, you should be sure that you are working each of your muscle groups and that you are working all of them for an extended period of time. This is something that people fail to do and can result in uneven and unhealthy training.
I happen to love being outdoors so hiking is my choice for an aerobic exercise. Today my son and I went with a very nice group from MWR to a place called Cougar Canyon. We went a total of 5 miles up and down the mountain. We could have gone more but his foot started to bother him. He is still healing from being wounded in Afghanistan. I really got a good aerobic workout while having fun chatting with people and taking some good photographs.
The best aerobics that you can do are going to be aerobics where you work each of your muscles in turn. Remember that you have to have a session where your heart is pumping, so a good thing to do is to be constantly moving while you are doing your aerobics. Then, you can move each of your muscles as well. The best whole body workout would be to start at a brisk walk. Get your heart rate up and going. Remember to include all of your muscles, and you’ll be losing weight and feeling healthier in no time flat. Hiking definitely does all those things!

“Paleolithic Diet Is Best Bet for Diabetes and Other Diseases by Loren Cordain, Ph.D.
A newly published study in Cardiovascular Diabetology compared the effects of a Paleolithic diet to the current guidelines for a diabetes diet, and looked at cardiovascular risk factors for type 2 diabetes patients.
The participating three women and ten men, who had type 2 diabetes that was not treated with insulin, were instructed to follow each diet for three-months. The Paleolithic diet used was lower in cereals and dairy products, and higher in fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs. It was also higher in unsaturated fatty acids, dietary cholesterol and several vitamins. It was lower in total energy, energy density, carbohydrate, dietary glycemic load (GL) and glycemic index (GI), saturated fatty acids and calcium.
Paleolithic diet compared to current diabetes diet
The study concluded that a Paleolithic diet improved glycemic control and several cardiovascular risk factors as compared to a diabetes diet.
The Paleolithic diet produced lower A1c, triglycerides, and diastolic blood pressure. An A1c test (also known as glycated hemoglobin or HbA1c) gives you a picture of your average blood glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months. Triglycerides are a type of fat found in your blood. Excess triglycerides in plasma are linked to coronary artery disease in some people. Elevated triglycerides may be a result of untreated diabetes mellitus or another disease. Diastolic blood pressure measures the pressure in your blood vessels between heartbeats when your heart is resting, and it’s the bottom number in a blood pressure reading. Below 60 is considered low, and higher than 90 is considered high. The Paleolithic diet also produced lower weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and higher high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. “Good” HDL cholesterol seems to scour the walls of blood vessels, and clean out excess cholesterol.
The authors of this study also compared the effects of a Paleolithic diet to those of several other diets:
Paleolithic diet compared to Mediterranean-like diet
This 12-week randomized controlled study involved 29 men with ischemic heart disease and impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes.
The study concluded that a Paleolithic diet improved glucose tolerance independent of weight-loss when compared to a Mediterranean-like diet1. Impaired glucose tolerance is considered to be a pre-diabetic state of dysglycemia that is associated with insulin resistance, and increased risk of cardiovascular pathology. Paleolithic diet studies with overweight individuals In a non-controlled study with nine overweight people who were otherwise healthy, intervention food was supplied and weight was kept steady. Researchers concluded that a Paleolithic diet consumed for just ten days improved diastolic blood pressure, glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles2.
Insulin sensitivity is one measure of the risk for heart disease. In general, the more sensitive one is, the lower the risk for heart problems.
Lipid profiles include tests that are often ordered together to determine the risk of coronary heart disease. These tests that have been shown to be good indicators of the risk for heart attack or stroke caused by blockage of blood vessels or hardening of the arteries, also known as atherosclerois. Lipid profiles typically include total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) — “good” cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) — “bad” cholesterol, and triglycerides.
A second non-controlled study of 14 healthy people found that three weeks on a Paleolithic diet significantly reduced weight, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, and the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1)3. Systolic blood pressure is the top number in a blood pressure reading, and it represents the maximum pressure exerted when the heart contracts. PAI-1 is mainly produced by the cells lining the blood vessels, but is also secreted by other tissue types. PAI-1 is an inhibitor of the physiological process that degrades blood clots. Elevated PAI-1 concentrations are associated with cardiovascular disease.
Hunter-gatherer diet studies with Australian Aborigines
One non-controlled study involved ten Australian Aborigines with diabetes, and a mean BMI of 27 kg/m2. Researchers concluded that reverting to a hunter–gatherer lifestyle for just seven weeks led to a 10% weight loss, and reductions in fasting and 2-hour glucose and fasting insulin levels4.
The same authors also conducted a second study with healthy Australian Aborigines. In this latter study, they found the insulin response to 70 g of starch from white bread was reduced, while the glucose response was not, following a reversion to a traditional lifestyle for 10- to 12-weeks5.
Epidemiological study with Pacific Islanders
This study looked at traditional Pacific Island inhabitants of Kitava, Papua New Guinea. These people, who practiced a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, had no signs of ischemic heart disease, stroke or markers of metabolic syndrome, which may result from their traditional lifestyle6-8. Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of symptoms that occur together, and promote the development of coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
Comparison of findings
The researchers concluded that all the improvements in markers of the metabolic syndrome on a Paleolithic diet are in line with findings from epidemiological studies in non-Western populations6-8. Improvements in A1c1, weight1, 4, 9, BMI9, waist circumference1, 9, diastolic blood pressure2, and triglycerides2 on a Paleolithic diet have been observed in intervention studies. A lower reported energy intake and energy density of food, despite food intake ad libitum, also agrees with earlier findings that a Paleolithic diet facilitates reduced caloric intake1, 10, 11.

No weight loss for the week. My sister is probably right, not enough calories and my body is holding back what it can. Yesterday was a perfect example. I had a salad when I got home when instead I should have had a couple of pieces of homemade pizza. I’m more frustrated about that than I am about not making it to the 60lb mark.
I also gained muscle this week from that new workout and getting the muscle is great. It’s going to help me lose more weight in the future and I’m really enjoying the shape that my body is taking. To feel the strength, the tone, the hardness of my body is something I thought I would never experience. And big picture, I’ve lost 58lbs in 6 months. So what if it takes another week to get to 60. I knew it was going to be hard to reach this goal in the first place. But this is not a failure, it’s a challenge that I’m still working towards. But does it count if I get there tomorrow?

Obesity stomach surgery can result in healthier babies according to a study published in the November Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
There have been plenty of scientific studies explaining the link between obesity and complications during pregnancy, for both the mother (such as gestational diabetes, chest infections, etc) as well as the foetus (such as increased risk of stillbirths), but this study – conducted by a surgeon from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn along with a team of researchers at University of Laval in Quebec City – is a little bit different.
The findings of this study essentially show that obesity creates an unhealthy environment for a foetus and the foetus can subsequently undergo changes in the womb that can cause problems later in life.
The research studied the offspring of 49 obese women who had both given birth and also undergone ‘biliopancreatic diversion bariatric surgery’ (where a portion of the stomach is removed and food and enzymes re-routed past part of the small intestine, limiting the amount of nutrients absorbed).
The average weight lost was more than one-third of their body weight rendering them from ‘obese’ to ‘slightly overweight’. All women studied had managed to keep the lost weight off.
111 children were born to these women, 54 before the surgery and 57 afterwards, and when studied (in 2005) their ages ranged from 2 to 25.
Nineteen children who were born to women before they underwent surgery ended up being severely obese, whilst only six children born to women after the surgery were obese. Statistically, this suggests the stomach surgery significantly reduces the incidence of obesity in the child.
Possibly more telling, however, was the fact that all the children born to post-operative mothers, as a group, scored better on a wide range of medical tests. They had better levels of hormones that regulate appetite, they used insulin more effectively, had better cholesterol levels, had lower levels of proteins indicative of chronic inflammation, and greatly reduced chances of cardiovascular disease, stroke and other long-term health problems.
How these changes are made ‘in utero’ is still unclear, any genes could potentially be modifiable, though the process of how this happens is not yet determined.
What does this mean for pregnant women and women wishing to get pregnant though? Well, obese pregnant women are likely to be told to lose weight, pregnant women in general will probably be told not to gain dramatic levels of weight, and obese women not yet pregnant but planning a child will most likely be told to lose a few stone before actually having one.
Whether we ever see a day where obese people are refused fertility treatment nationwide as standard, not unlike what is happening in Southport, Merseyside, will be anyone’s guess. But if you ask me, it won’t be that long coming. Transcending issues of weight, public health, the future burden on the NHS, and the wider health of the future generation makes for a powerful mix.
Is this a good thing? For both the mother and the unborn child I think it is. The health benefits of losing weight provide an overwhelming case. Being told to lose weight ‘for the sake of their child’ may act as a better incentive to some women; if lacking the willpower to do it for themselves, they might do it for their child.
So, the unborn child is dependent upon the mother for its future health, but ultimately the mother might be dependent on the unborn child for her future health. I think there’s something rather fitting about that…
